I feel like playing two of my favorite genres. Top down shooter gameplay in Shooty Skies turned out to be very exciting when combined with endless runner elements and voxel graphics a la Crossy Road. Curious how these two elements can be harmoniously combined? Lets see my review below.
As a shooter game, Shooty Skies has a surprise element by exposing me to waves of enemies that come randomly. This is quite different from most top down shooter games that have enemy patterns so they can be memorized and anticipated.
The patterns and types of enemies that block are always different in every session of my game. There is no exact level because the direction of arrival, type, until the pattern of enemy attacks is never the same. This tests my reflexes and decision-making abilities, because the strategy of memorizing patterns is completely useless here.
After successfully breaking through the invading invincible keroco enemies, I was confronted with the appearance of a boss character who was equally randomized by the game. I cant predict what boss character and attack pattern I will face. Whats more, the bosss ability to attack will be even more dangerous along with the depletion of the energy he has.
The element of surprise is still added to the various shooter mechanisms that add to the excitement of the game. My efforts to break down wave after wave of enemies are assisted with special weapons, various power-ups, and the presence of partners who get rid of the enemies.
Mighty Games is able to utilize touch screen technology to provide the convenience of playing arcade shooter games on todays portable devices. The control I need to do in Shooty Skies only requires one finger to touch the screen and move the character.
By touching the screen, the character will automatically fire the machine gun which is his main weapon. Sliding your finger while touching the screen changes the position of the characters on the screen. By releasing touch, the character will fill a special weapon in the form of a collection of missiles that will be fired when I touch the screen again.
These very simple controls flow smoothly during the game. Characters move swiftly following the finger dance on the screen without any lag at all. This control design also allows me to concentrate on the enemies that come and go without feeling awkward with the complexity of control.
One of the brilliant things that I remember from the Crossy Road team was the design of the adverts and IAP offers in the game that did not interfere with playing comfort. In fact, the placement of the two elements seemed to support overall gameplay.
Something similar can be found in Shooty Skies. I was offered various offers to watch advertisements or buy new characters through IAP. Strangely, I did not feel disturbed at all and even watched the video ad with pleasure to get various power-ups and bonuses offered.
The game will offer advertisements every time a game session ends. By being willing to watch a thirty-second ad video, I was given the opportunity to continue playing or get a certain bonus. Bonuses that I can get are quite diverse, such as the addition of a number of coins to power-up shots for the next few hours.
Shooty Skies doesnt know the energy system, so I have full control over how long I want to play. I can immediately restart the game after one session ends without having to wait for the energy to recharge as found in some other freemium games.
One of the things maintained by Matt Hall and Andy Sum is the Crossy Road-style voxel graphics. The witty animations delivered through this simple display proved to be able to amaze players all over the world.
I again found cube-shaped trees and characters and objects in the game that seemed to be made from boxes. Even though this display is clearly not the best graphic on the mobile platform, in my opinion its good enough to be enjoyed during the game.
Nevertheless, the monotonous game background during the game has the potential to cause boredom while enjoying the action on Shooty Skies. I was only treated to the same scene from the beginning to the end of the game session without any variation in the background object.
Mighty Games actually tries to provide variations by presenting different backgrounds for different characters. However, the effect that I felt only happened at the beginning of the game. Repetitive impressions come back after playing for several minutes.
Shooty Skies has all the aspects that have brought Crossy Road to success last year. Smart freemium scheme, exciting gameplay, and stunningly simple graphics. I can imagine Shooty Skies will be loved by all ages who play it.
This game is suitable for you who want a brief or intense entertainment. Whats more, its ability to be played offline makes it suitable to be enjoyed anytime and anywhere.
